Cairo – Mubasher: Oriental Weavers Carpet has joined the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative.
This membership reflects the company's commitment to the ten main principles of the Global Compact, which will enable the company to achieve long-term success and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a press release on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the company was appointed as a founding member of the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC), a CEO-led initiative emanating from the UN Global Compact Africa Strategy 2021–2023.
The Chairwoman of the company, Yasmine Khamis, said: "We’ve been recently ramping up efforts around all our sustainability initiatives, including our environmental responsibility practices which started three years ago, which included decreasing our carbon footprint by 10% annually."
Meanwhile, Khamis added: "We implemented an energy-saving management system in our plants to reduce GHG emissions, and we launched our first solar plant at one of our biggest showrooms in Alexandria."
